Specialties > Tumors of the pituitary gland

Of all Prof. Fahlbusch's specialties, tumors of the pituitary gland (e.g. pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas) are his central competence. He has operated on over 4,000 such patients and provided pre- and post-operative care. Prof. Fahlbusch is one of the most experienced experts in this field (For publications, see PubMed). He is an honorary member of the German Endocrine Society, a member of the advisory board "Pituitary Gland Network", and a member of the board of the Craniopharyngioma Forum.

Care of these patients requires special knowledge of endocrinology, ophthalmology, radiological diagnostics and the surgical treatment of tumors in the area of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland.

Initial consultations focus primarily upon initial diagnosis and a discussion of the therapeutic options. Treatment may then consist of surgery, medicinal treatment or radiotherapy. In some cases, however, a more conservative, observational treatment may also be advised.

These are highly specialized operations (minimal invasive/endoscopic) requiring clarification particularly regarding the pituitary gland and hypothalamus due to the sometimes risky treatment.
